The new $30 million redevelopment of The Hutchins School campus including the NJ Edwards Hub
JMG provided building services, civil and structural engineering for The Hutchins School NJ Edwards Hub, delivered as part of the School's largest capital redevelopment and broader campus masterplan. Referred to as the Signature Building, the Hub serves as the School's new entrance and feature facility, named in recognition of the major philanthropic donor family supporting the project.
The facility is designed to accommodate the entire school community, centred around two full-size
competition basketball courts with seating for approximately 1,300 (700 fixed and 600 portable). Supporting spaces include a large foyer/function area, boardroom and meeting rooms, green room, sports offices, equipment storage, four changerooms, public amenities, and a fully equipped gymnasium beneath, with additional space for future fit-out. JMG delivered a coordinated multi-disciplinary solution across civil, structural and building services. Structurally, the project incorporated 103 driven timber piles to address ground conditions, over 500 precast concrete elements including architectural panels, and large-span steel roof trusses exceeding 37m to create
open internal spaces while integrating services. Temporary works and staging were also developed to support construction sequencing. Civil works included upgrades to stormwater, sewer, water and fire services, including an above-ground firefighting tank and below-ground stormwater detention and treatment systems to improve site performance. The building features fully zoned air-conditioning with CO2-controlled modes, a 100 KW rooftop solar system, touchscreen lighting controls, and a sophisticated audio-visual system including a 7m x 4m LED screen and FIBA-compliant scoring systems.
The project also involved the largest single mass exhumation and reinternment of historic burials from the former Queenborough Cemetery, with identified individuals respectfully relocated to Cornelian Bay.
