Boating Facility
In addition to providing professional design services for the new Bridgewater Bridge’s precast facility for the bridge box girder segments, JMG also provided civil and structural engineering design services for the new Bridgewater Boating Facility. The new facility was designed to align with the architectural character and functionality of the new bridge infrastructure, and has been well received by both the boating and the local community. The upgraded facility was designed to improve access, circulation and long-term usability for the boating community, while allowing for future expansion of car and trailer parking areas as demand increases.
The scope of works included:
New holding structure (jetty)
New boat ramp
New trailer manoeuvring, rigging and de-rigging area
New car parking, including trailer parking bays
One-way vehicle circulation
50-year design life, including consideration of future sea level rise
JMG delivered a coordinated engineering solution addressing several complex site and construction challenges. The design incorporated rigorous wave height assessments and responded to difficult geotechnical conditions along the river interface.
An innovative jetty headstock design was developed to allow circular hollow section piles to be installed vertically rather than using traditional raking piles, improving constructability and reducing construction complexity.
The facility was also designed to minimise the need for divers during construction. The boat ramp incorporated precast concrete panels with innovative tie systems securing the structure to the underlying rock base, enhancing long-term durability and performance.
The completed facility is now in regular use, providing improved boating infrastructure for the Bridgewater area.
