Our History

We would like to take this opportunity to elaborate a little on JMG and its proud 60-plus year history in Tasmania.

Page Title

Ian L. Johnstone & Associates (as we were known then) commenced in 1960 with just 11 projects in its first year, and a staff of two, out of a one room office at 148 Elizabeth Street, offering structural and civil engineering services.  During the 1960’s and 1970’s we provided services into some of Tasmania’s most landmark buildings including 144 Macquarie Street, 1 Franklin Wharf, and the Hydro Electric Commission building.

In 1977 the company expanded to provide building services and appointed its first Board of Directors which included Ian L Johnstone and Alan McGee.  We also opened our Launceston office in Elphin Road and some 45 years (plus) later, we are the only Tasmanian consulting engineering firm to have a continuous presence in the area.  During the 1980's and 1990's our business continued to grow, and we provided various consulting services into signatures projects such as the ABC Centre, the Derwent Entertainment Centre, the Launceston International Hotel and the ABT Railway.

In 1994 we added to our service offering a Building Maintenance Management arm with just one client, the ATO at 200 Collins Street.  Today this business unit manages over 50 significant clients around Hobart with 700 buildings under management. In 2006 we saw another major development in the history of JMG Engineers when we added the planning division to our business. The planning department continued on until 2023 completing an impressive list of major land and property developments and strategic projects across the State.

In 2010 we increased our business operations in Launceston by merging with Dale P Luck and Associates which saw a major expansion of our structural and civil engineering capability in the North.

In more recent times with our current CEO Chris Holloway at the helm, we have added many more exciting projects to our name including the Icon/Myer Redevelopment,  Mona Pharos & Siloam, The Hedberg at UTAS, the Risdon Prison Southern Remand Centre and MyState Bank Arena. In 2020 a major milestone was reached when we celebrated our 60th birthday and during that time clocked over 31,000 jobs with over 70 talented staff across our Hobart and Launceston Offices.

Today, JMG is a dynamic engineering consultancy who strives to be an industry leader in providing assured engineering solutions across Tasmania. We are a multidisciplinary practice operating in government and private sectors with architects, project managers, and property owners to facilitate a wide range of exciting projects.

From humble beginnings our future now lies in continuing to provide customer focused engineering services, and being agile enough to respond to the ever-changing landscape in which we work, whilst recognising that our talented staff and valued clients are the vehicle to take us there.
